The Eight Duke of Beaufort (1 February 1824 \u2013 30 April 1899)\u00a0wrote this book at the end of the 19th Century.\u00a0It was part of “The Badminton Library” collection of sports and pastimes in the British isles.\u00a0The Eight Duke lived through the time when Fox hunting as we know it today was developed.\u00a0It was also the same period that the Reverend John (Jack) Russell became famous for his terriers.<\/p>\n

The Chapter on hunting the otter demonstrates the value that huntsmen placed on their terriers to successfully hunt during this era.<\/p>\n

Fox Hunting – The Duke of Beaufort – 1982<\/h2>\n

Below is an extract from a book published in 1982 by the grandson of the Eight Duke. It is rare to see such a practical and honest approach to hunting in a book of this era. This is an excellent account of the hunting field, hounds, kennels, terriers, digging and a spirited defense of Fox hunting. It is worth obtaining a copy if it comes your way.<\/h4>\n

“Undoubtedly the terrier is an indispensable adjunct to the Hunt establishment, though I do not expect the galloping and jumping contingency to agree with me. I think it is true to say that 90 per cent of people who hunt in the shires for instance, are there to gallop and jump, though undoubtedly they get a thrill from the sound of the horn and the cry of the hounds. It is the remaining 10 per cent who are what I would class as hound men – and a real hound man is more likely to go to a less fashionable pack for his sport. This leaves very few to enjoy the undoubted pleasures of terrier work.”<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n
