Rodenticide resistance in rats seems to be on the rise with several different mutations of the resistance gene present throughout the UK. Unfortunately, knowledge of the exact distribution and composition of these resistant populations is limited, although we now have a good idea of the likely impact of the different mutations on treatment outcome. As part of a research project at the University of Reading they have been trapping rats throughout the UK in order to obtain tissue samples which they can then use for DNA analysis to determine their exact resistance mutation, if present. They can then start to build up a distribution map of the resistance strains which are present in the UK.

When they complete the DNA analysis I.W.T.F. members will have access to the results.
