U.O.R. Rodent Research Project
The Federation have been asked to assist with an ongoing project to monitor resistant strains of rats in the UK. Rodenticide resistance in rats seems to be on the rise with several different mutations of the resistance gene present throughout the UK. Unfortunately, knowledge of the exact distribution and composition of these resistant populations is limited, although we now have a good idea of the likely impact of the different mutations on treatment outcome.
As part of a research project at the University of Reading they have been trapping rats throughout the UK in order to obtain tissue samples which they can then use for DNA analysis to determine their exact resistance mutation, if present. They can then start to build up a distribution map of the resistance strains which are present in the UK.
When they complete the DNA analysis I.W.T.F. members will have access to the results. They have informed us that they regularly get resistant strains, and because of the limited use of available and effective poisons for these resistant strains, they usually advise that the recipient uses an alternative method of control such as shooting, trapping or using working terriers. I.W.T.F. members provide pest control solutions to local farmers, and gamekeepers dealing with all pests. The federation is interested in scientific studies and expertise that may assist our members to perform this duty in the most humane and efficient way possible. Participating Clubs in Northern Ireland will be contacted with further details.
